07.09.2004 ...Dioskuria, Sebastopolis, Sukhum-Kale - these are the different names of Sukhum, the city, in which I was born and grew up. This place still preserves the remains of ancient cultures, including Palaeolithic, Bronze Age, Greek and Roman as well as Byzantine frescos and mosaic.
"An empire, if you happened to be born to better live in distant province, by the ocean"
But the laws of the Empire were enforced in Soviet Abkhazia. It had its own ‘official art’ and ‘underground’, at least from the early 1970s. In Sukhum, though, the local underground did not put itself in opposition to official art; it rather tried to ‘turn bitterness into vitality’. A group of young Sukhum artists who were slightly older than me were interested in 20th century world art. Picasso, Braque, Deloné, Rauschenberg, Rothko, Kandinsky, Mirò and others - whose authority would not be doubted now but who were then proscribed - formed our artistic tastes despite the scarcity of information that was available about them.
It is impossible to tell with certainty what moulds an artist. Personal temperament, intellect and the level of spiritual organisation combine to form a fabric into which the influence of the local cultural ambience, of other artists and of an interest in other eras are woven. This selectivity - whether conscious or unconscious - creates a unique pattern in art’s kaleidoscope, with its own individual detail."
