The panels by Igor TulpanovWhile discovering new and underestimated artists, the Gallery suggests one invests in art not only money, but also the years spent in love with beauty.

The panels by Igor Tulpanov, presented in the Gallery's booth are part of his Magnificent 47 series, the idea of which is to combine on one panel the incompatible in time, most significant personalities in the history of the mankind.

Igor Tulpanov was born in Leningrad in 1939. He began drawing in early childhood. He attended painting and drawing courses at the Institute of painting, sculpture and architecture named after Ilya Repin, then - Nikolay Akimov’s workshop at the Leningrad Institute of theatre, music and cinematography. After graduation, he worked as production designer in Moscow and Leningrad theatres. In 1977 Tulpanov emigrated to France and then to the United States where he lives now.

For the last twelve years, Igor Tulpanov has been working on a large-scale artistic project – Magnificent 47. While creating his “pantheon,” the artist selects his heroes from thousands of names and images who left a trail in the history of the mankind.

Imagine that all the world's geniuses have tickets to a theatre. They take theirs seats in the stalls. They form neighborhoods, start dialogues, create bands and the couples become inseparable. The parquet is filled with the idols of the world civilization – real, mythological, literary: Einstein in the company with Bosch, Mozart with Mona Lisa, Napoleon with Michelangelo, Cervantes with the Muse of Chinese Poetry, Durer with the Muse of Japanese Literature, Bach with St Nikolas, Mephistopheles with St John the Baptist, Pushkin arm in arm with the Queen of Spades, Churchill with Venus, Lincoln with Louis XIV, Shakespeare with Catherine the Great and Socrates… Who else? Homer, Dante, Jeanne d’Arc, Kurosava… And only Jesus, understandably, is alone. The neighborhood of Tulpanov’s personages is unexpected and fantastic, however this collision of incompatibles produces the Thought…

The epic scale and playfulness of the Magnificent 47 series creates the exclusive effect of perception. On one hand, due to the unbelievably mastery drawing of combinations of personages, the scrupulous penetration to the item produces a new reality of their existence. On the other hand, this reality is being pierced by the ironical imagination of the author and comprehended. As a result, semantic relationships and his most superfine nuances of color and drawing produce integral and spiritually worked out creation – the delicate and clever game of craftsmanship of the big master and artist Igor Tulpanov.
